Police have identified both victims in the fatal plane crash in Carroll County.
The victims are identified as Robert H. Kociemba, 61, from Davidsonville, Md. and and Letty Williams, 66, from Edgewater. The two were said to have been friends.
State police spokesman Greg Shipley says Kociemba was flying the two-seater plane that crashed into a cornfield near Tawneytown early Saturday. Shipley says the plane went down about a quarter-mile from the Keymar Airpark, a privately owned airport.
"The plane is into the ground, it's crumpled up. It's in a very small area. it's in a cornfield, where the ground was soft. No explosion, no scattering of anything. It just went into the ground," said Lou Jordan, spokesperson for Union Bridge Fire Company.
Kociemba was said to be an experienced pilot who had flown from the same airport many times before. The woman passenger was in her 50s.
The plane is described as a Golden Circle Air T-Bird II, with its engine and propeller located in the back.
"We were able to see it was somebody's plane down and they didn't make it. it's devastating because they're people that you know," said John Gorecki, lives nearby.
It's unclear what caused the crash. State police say federal authorities will investigate the incident.
