Man Gets Prison Time In L.I. Slavery Case

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (CBS/AP) ― A millionaire convicted along with his wife of virtually enslaving two Indonesian housekeepers has been sentenced to more than three years in prison.

Mahender Sabhnani was convicted in December of counts including forced labor and involuntarily servitude. He was sentenced Friday to three years and four months in prison.

The workers testified that they were beaten with brooms and umbrellas, slashed with knives, and forced to take cold showers.

A judge has handed a three and one-third year prison sentence to a millionaire convicted along with his wife of keeping two Indonesian housekeepers as virtual slaves in their Long Island home.

On Thursday, Varsha Sabhnani received an 11-year sentence. Prosecutors said she was the one who abused the women.
