'Educator Of The Year' Sentenced For Child Porn
LUMBERTON, N.J. (CBS) ―
A teacher once named "Educator of the Year" in a southern New Jersey town has been sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison for possessing child pornography.
Joseph Macanga, a former sixth-grade teacher at the Lumberton Middle School, was also ordered Wednesday to serve five years' probation following his release.
When he pleaded guilty in November 2008, Macanga admitted that between October 2006 and Oct. 11, 2007, he possessed numerous child porn images he had download onto his home computer. Prosecutors said he used nearly 30 Internet chatrooms to share the images.
The 55-year-old Macanga will remain free on $100,000 bond until federal prison authorities determine a surrender date. He will then serve a 57-month term.
Child pornography, which is defined differently from obscenity, is illegal under federal law and in all U.S. states.
