U.S. Asking N. Korea To Release Americans

CBS News Interactive: North Korea Threats

WASHINGTON (AP) ― The United States is calling for the release of two Americans detained in North Korea.

But State Department spokesman Gordon Duguid said Tuesday that stalled nuclear disarmament talks with the North are not linked with the fate of the reporters.

Duguid says U.S. officials have seen reports that the North intends to put the reporters on trial but he could not confirm the information.

He said officials are "working this matter diplomatically," adding the U.S. "would like to see our citizens released."

Euna Lee and Laura Ling, who work for former Vice President Al Gore's Current TV media venture, were detained by North Korean border guards March 17 while on a reporting trip.
