NYPD Gets Black Eye After Alleged Pistol-Whipping
Witnesses Come Out Of Woodwork To Give Description Of Beatdown 2 Female Cops Are Accused Of Dishing Out
BRONX (CBS) ―
Two New York City Police officers have been stripped of their shields, accused of brutally beating down a man who they say got in their way. The incident took place on a busy Bronx street corner, where CBS 2 HD had no trouble finding witnesses.
On Friday at around 5 p.m. there was an incident on White Plains Road by 218th Street. By Monday it had its own name: "The Fight."
Two women against one guy.
The two women were off-duty police officers. The guy was sent to the hospital. Now their careers are in trouble.
"Blood started coming
because I think she had something in her hand and hit him in his head," witness Roxann Rutherford said. "
"Another lady pulled out a gun, put the clip in," witness David Sherland said. "She put the clip in, but when she did it seemed like she didn't do it right, so it came right back out and fell on the ground."
The man -- Marlon Smith, 35 -- was beaten so badly, with a club, and even a gun, witnesses said, that he was taken to the hospital. He was allegedly beaten by Michelle Anglin, 37, and Koleen Robinson, 24 -- two of New York City's finest. He's back home, but wasn't really in the mood to talk to reporters on Tuesday.
"As soon as I can talk to you
I'm just happy to be alive right now," Smith said.
A Good Samaritan attempted to help Smith after he was beaten.
A witness got the suspects' license plate. The two officers are now charged with gang assault, menacing and criminal possession of a weapon.
"Internal Affairs was able to identify the owners of the car, sat on the car and arrested both of the officers," NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said.
Patricia Bell said she could see it all from her office window. She said she had no idea the alleged assailants were police officers, but
"They looked very skilled at what they were doing," Bell said.
Clearly Kelly wasn't pleased.
"If these allegations prove true it's a horrendous situation," Kelly said.
Sherland, the witness who earlier spoke of seeing a gun clip hit the pavement, said the victim never had a chance.
"They gave it to him," Sherland said.
