A police dog is dead, after a man who was being chased by police in southern California grabbed the dog and leaped off a bridge.
The man survived the 200-foot fall into the frigid ocean water, but the dog did not.
The fugitive remains hospitalized.
Police say the pursuit began after a police officer in Oceanside saw the man driving erratically. The officer, accompanied by a German shepherd, ordered the driver to stop, but he refused.
The chase continued onto the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, where the man stopped and the officer released the dog. At that point, officers say, the dog took the man down, and the man lifted the dog up and jumped over the bridge.
The man was rescued and taken to a hospital. There's no word on his condition.
