Big Apple Picks Up After Messy Storm

Powerful Winds Toppled Trees, Damaged Cars In NYC

BROOKLYN (CBS) ― The storm has passed and the massive clean up is now under way in the Big Apple.

After four long days of stifling heat, a storm broke through, cooling the air with strong winds and lightning that lit up the sky. When it was over scaffolding was torn apart and littering Audobon Avenue in Washington Heights.

Chainsaws and wood being ripped apart in chippers were what

Riverside Drive residents woke up to the sounds of chainsaws and wood being ripped apart in chippers.

"I saw all the trees that were down and the mess that was made and it's a shame," said Debra Rosenberg.

"It's a shame you," concurred Mark Miller. "These trees are a lot older than I am and they are a real asset in the park and now they are wiped out as are some pretty beautiful cars."

The tree and limb covered road and park were difficult sights to see, but even worse for Silvina Vilas' fears came true when she reached her ford focus to go to work.

"I was walking down the street thinking oh, there are a lot of branches but I wasn't imagining a massive tree falling on my car," said Vilas.

In the Bronx, tree branches were on the roads and sidewalks - all a result of Tuesday night's wind and rain storm.

"Whenever there are really strong winds, that tree would just swing like this and I would say oh, my god I hope it doesn't fall," said Guillemette Bowler. "This time it did [fall]."

And right onto the Bowler family's brand new Prius. But as upsetting as this is they are grateful it wasn't much worse.

"It's just a car," said Bowler.

In Jamaica, Queens winds toppled a tree onto a car, cracking its windshield, side, and putting enough weight that it forced the air out of the tires.

Con Ed said 12,000 customers were left without power after the storms.
