New York psychologist Kathryn Faughey, 56, was hacked to death with a meat cleaver inside an office building in the Upper East Side neighborhood Tuesday night, police said.
Residents were in shock as news spread of the brutal attack, reported CBS station WCBS-TV in New York.
Kent Shinback, a male therapist who attempted to assist Faughey during the attack, was also seriously injured with cuts to his face. Shinback was hospitalized and is currently in serious but stable condition.
The killer is still at large.
The NYPD said it is looking for a male suspect, but not much more is known about him other than that he was believed to be a patient of the deceased therapist's.
"We were looking and we saw them wheeling someone out on a gurney and I was wondering what was going on," witness Alexandra Pike told WCBS-TV. "My stepfather said, 'They're all covered up. That means they're dead.'"
Faughey, a licensed psychologist, practiced cognitive behavioral therapy, which focuses on changing thoughts that cause feelings or behaviors.
