New York's Archbishop, Timothy Dolan, is en route to Italy Thursday evening to receive a special honor from the pope, and it's a pilgrimage he's been looking forward to for quite some time.
Dolan already has one special vestment, called a Pallium, from his days as Archbishop of Milwaukee. Now, he's heading to Rome to receive another one for his new job as spiritual leader of the two million Catholics of the New York archdiocese. It's made of lamb's wool and is heavily symbolic.
"It's a symbol of two things," Dolan said of the Pallium. "That my sheep mean everything to me, my people, and that I have an intimate bond with the (Pope)."
New York's archbishop will receive his new Pallium from Pope Benedict XVI in a special ceremony at Saint Peter's Square.
"It's a yoke, a harness all right, and I'm harnessed to the man who gives it to me: the pope, the bishop of Rome," Dolan said.
Timothy Dolan has been New York's archbishop for two months and 10 days and he says the most surprising part has been residents' welcoming nature toward him.
"The friendliness of the people [is a surprise] because the characteristic is that New York is filled with people in your face, cold, aggressive and I haven't met any of them," Dolan says.
Even though Dolan says he loves New York, he's dreaming of his beloved Roma right now. Having spent four years there as a seminarian and another seven years as a rector, his Italian is pretty good and he's been eagerly anticipating a return trip.
"I love Rome and I'm going to pray for all the people of New York when I'm there," he says.
The Archbishop will be back to New York July 2, and expects to wear his new Pallium when he celebrates mass at Saint Patrick's Cathedral on July 5.
The archbishop is flying with a group of 250 of the faithful from the archdiocese.
He was installed as Archbishop of New York on April 15.
Dolan will also celebrate mass at St. Peter's Basilica while on his trip.
