The man police believe terrorized a Pompano Beach, Fla. appliance dealer as he stalked his ex-girlfriend before emptying his semi-automatic weapon at her has surrendered to police in West Palm Beach, ending a day long manhunt.
Police departments across South Florida had been searching for 28-year-old Roger Murray, wanted in connection with the shooting of his former girlfriend, 26-year old Derica Edwards-Clark.
The Broward Sheriff's Office said Murray walked into Florida Builders Appliance at shortly after 9 a.m. EST early Friday. He then opened fire on the woman, and then tried to kill himself, police say. He failed and fled, sparking a massive manhunt.
Police reported that he had surrendered in Palm Beach County shortly after 4 p.m.
Broward Sheriff Ken Jenne said Murray stalked the office area, looking through a series of cubicles, accompanied by his friend. Jenne said Murray was apparently looking for Edwards-Clark, and when he found her, Murray took out a small-caliber semi-automatic weapon, and fired repeatedly, hitting the woman multiple times.
"He chased her around the maze of cubicles there," Jenne said, "There were about a half dozen other people in there." Jenne said co-workers were terrified by the speed and ferocity of the attack.
Then, Jenne said, the suspect apparently tried to kill himself.
"We have witnesses who tell us he put the gun to his head and clicked it," Jenne said, "and it was out of ammunition."
The woman was taken to North Broward Medical Center in critical condition, with wounds to the hip and arm, while Murray fled the building.
The gunman fled the business, and was seen leaving in a car with a male companion. Investigators later learned that the men drove the silver, 2005 Honda Accord to a convenience store in Pompano Beach where they bought some beer. They left the store and walked away, police said, leaving the Honda behind.
Police started a widespread search involving K-9 units and helicopters, and located Murray's car was located a short distance away, and police surrounded the vehicle, which had such heavy window tint officers could not tell if Murray was inside. As helicopters hovered overhead, they forced their way into the car but Murray was not found.
Investigators say Murray was captured on surveillance video before and after the attack. Police are also looking for his companion in the attack, who did not apparently fire a weapon.
Investigators don't know his name, but described him as dark skinned, approximately 6-foot-2, with dreads tied-up on top of his head, last seen wearing long, white short-sleeved shirt and light colored trousers. He remains at large.
