Roman Catholic activists are using Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the United States as a lightning rod for several protests about issues important to them.
The groups have planned vigils and rallies this week on causes like the ordination of women, gay rights, sex abuse by priests and the Vatican ban on contraception.
The pope's visit to Washington and New York begins on Tuesday.
Supporters of women's ordination will host a Mass at a Methodist church in Washington on the eve of the pope's arrival. Gay Catholic activists plan to demonstrate Tuesday along the papal motorcade route in Washington.
