Many New York City-area Catholics were ecstatic over Pope Benedict XVI's three-day visit to the Big Apple. He received a red carpet welcome at JFK Airport on Friday, April 19.
The pope's arrival in New York came after a three-day visit to Washington D.C. where he met President Bush, and put the country's clergy sexual abuse scandal front and center. He also addressed the United Nations, visited a synagogue and participated in an Ecumenical Service at a New York parish.
On April 19, the Pontiff celebrated a morning Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral, then visited Saint Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers to participate in a youth event.
Before returning to the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI descended into Ground Zero on April 20, meeting with family members of 9/11 victims, and offering prayers for the victims, as well as those responsible.

Biography:
Timeline: Pope Benedict XVI's Rise To The Papacy
Benedict XVI is a pope and a scholar. He was born Joseph Ratzinger on Holy Saturday in Marktl am Inn, Diocese of Passau, Germany. His childhood was spent in Traunstein, a small village near the Austrian border. It was during his youth that the future "Vicar of Christ" would receive a strengthening of his testimony, in the face of Nazi excesses and hostility towards the Catholic Church, which included physical abuses directed towards clergy prior to the celebration of Mass.
During the last months of the war, then-Ratzinger was enrolled in an German auxiliary anti-aircraft corps.
Benedict XVI studied philosophy and theology at the University of Munich. He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1951. Two years later, he completed his doctoral studies in theology with a thesis entitled "People and House of God in St Augustine's Doctrine of the Church."
For the next decade, Benedict XVI lectured on the disciplines of dogmatic and fundamental theology, attaining the position of Chair of dogmatics and history of dogma at the University of Regensburg, and also the vice presidency of the university.
Benedict XVI also made contributions to Vatican II from 1962 to 1965, as the theological advisor to Cardinal Joseph Frings, Archbishop of Cologne.
In 1972, along with other theologians, Benedict XVI began the theological journal "Communio."
His ordination to Archbishop and Cardinal came in 1977 at the hands of Pope Paul VI.
Benedict XVI has received numerous "Honoris Causa" Doctorates, from the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota (1984), the Catholic University of Lima (1986), the Catholic University of Eichstätt (1987); the Catholic University of Lublin (1988), the University of Navarre (1998), the Libera Università Maria Santissima Assunta in Rome (1999), and from the Faculty of Theology of the University of Wrocław in Poland (2000).
Benedict XVI became the successor to Saint Peter on April 19, 2005.
