NEW YORK (CBS) ―
When Pope Benedict XVI visits New York next week, along with massive security he'll also have 14 special people watching his every step.
An ambulance has received a special blessing for the pope's visit. CBS 2 HD introduces you to the paramedics who've been chosen to take care of the Holy Father.
Meet three of the pope's paramedics, at least for the three days he's in New York.
"We're working 12-hour shifts and then we'll rotate, but wherever he goes we'll be there also," Rona Chambers said.
Paramedics from St. Vincent's Hospital will shadow Pope Benedict around the clock. Even when he's sleeping the ambulance will be right outside.
Rig 1770 will be the only ambulance traveling in the pope's motorcade. It's brand new and has received a special blessing.
While all the paramedics are honored with their assignment to the pope, it has special meaning for Eric Jimenez, who recently converted to the Catholic faith.
"Words can't even describe how happy I am to actually be this close to the pope, not only to be this close but to be one of his personal paramedics," Jimenez said.
Out of nearly 100 paramedics at St. Vincent's the 14 most experienced were chosen. Brian Saddler has more than 20 years on the job and was part of the paramedic team that watched over Pope John Paul II during his visit to New York in 1995.
He says while everyone is excited, a key part of the job is staying calm.
"So if you treat every patient with the same quality of care you won't get nervous," Saddler explained. "But, of course, it is the pope and some day I'd like to go to heaven and this might pave the way a little bit."
The paramedics tell CBS 2 HD they won't be saying any special prayers before the pope's visit, because on this job they pray every day.
The pope will celebrate his 81st birthday during next week's visit. In the past, the Vatican has declined to comment on the pontiff's health, citing his privacy.
