Pope Fans Celebrate On Bronx Streets
Web Exclusive: Pope Perspective Outside Yankee Stadium
Tara Lipinsky
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
You didn't have to be inside Yankee Stadium on Sunday to feel the power of Pope Benedict XVI's visit to New York City.
And you didn't have to be from the Bronx, either.
Boston, New Orleans, Texas, Maine
from those hawking their pope-laden wares to Catholics on a mission they came to the stadium in droves, even without a golden ticket to get through the gate.
Once mass started, those left out in the cold, found a warm place to watch the show.
Many people packed into Stan's Sports bar, and grabbed a beer and some grub, while Pope Benedict reminded Americans to use their freedom wisely.
"I will remember this and tell me grandchildren about this," Lena from Maine exclaimed. The reason she came to town, the Pontiff's visit. And she didn't even have a ticket.
Anti-catholic groups also lined the streets near the stadium, but the Bronx Hispanic community organized singing and dancing, to move them out of their neighborhood, and the Pope's message was clearly heard.
"God bless the Pope." Bob from Texas exclaimed, as he and his family grabbed a bite to eat. They too, traveled to the Big Apple for the sole purpose of standing in the same state as Benedict XVI.
