Family First: Summer Activities For Kids

If you're looking for free family fun, check out these great activities that'll keep the little ones entertained and they won't hurt your wallet.
For activities to help continue your July 4th celebrations, why not Declare Independence at Prospect Park's Lefferts House Museum? The all-age event takes place this Friday, from 1-4 pm. Families can re-create that revolutionary day when our fore fathers gave us freedom. Bring hearty appetites along with your quill pens; you'll be treated to homemade ice cream.

If you would rather work off all those hamburgers with a more strenuous activity, hit the Hudson for some Kayaking! From 10:00- 5:00 pm, every Saturday and Sunday, (weather permitting) Riverside Park offers the unique opportunity to paddle around the Hudson for 20-minutes. All you have to bring are your bathing suits and swimming skills. The Downtown Boathouse provides life jackets, kayaks and paddles.

Spend Saturday afternoon enjoying story-telling adventures during the Ezra Jack Keats Story Hour. Hear stories written and illustrated by the award-winning author known for including multi -cultural, child-characters in his story-telling. The sessions will be held Saturdays, from 2-3:00 pm, at Prospect Parks' Imagination Playground.

Prospect ParkOn Sunday...Cinderella with a Latin twist. The classic tale of the girl and the glass slipper gets a Brazilian remix, when Cinderella performs the Samba in a dance competition to win the heart of the Prince. Still not impressed? The tale is brought to life by hand puppets.

AMC TheatresFrom tots to teens, it's not too late to get your kids active this summer. Soccer Tots and Pee Wee Basketball lessons are being offered on Wednesday mornings at Riverside Park for the little ones. City Parks Foundation offers free track & field, golf and tennis lessons to 5-16 year olds, at various parks throughout the boroughs. Track & field lessons begin this Monday. The New York Junior Tennis League also offers free tennis instruction for 6-18 year olds. But hurry, registration for these events are on a first come, first serve basis.
