NYC Providing Free Help For Job Seekers
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
Over the next two years in New York City, about 170,000 people are projected to lose their jobs. So more and more job seekers are turning to experts to help them polish their business skills. The City is answering the call, providing advice, training, and referrals for free.
Rosemarie Martinez landed her dream job at the Brooklyn Educational Opportunity Center. She has a masters degree in education, but worked in Puerto Rico for the last 12 years, so when she relocated to New York, she had great difficulty in her job search.
"There was a point I was sending out so many resumes, but I wasn't getting interviews so I had to change my strategy," she said.
That strategy was going to a "Workforce 1 Career Center," which is supported by the city, and everything is free. Employment experts will help you with everything from job training, to polishing up your resume and interviewing skills, and they'll match you with employers.
Today, Lisette Izaguirre-Carpio is interviewing for a new job. She'd been in banking for years, but is now open to other opportunities. "Use my skills but change careers, I'm looking into executive assisting or legal assisting," she said.
The city is also helping businesses and entrepreneurs, at its Business Solutions Centers. With more than 200,000 small businesses in the city, the goal is to keep them in New York and make sure they survive.
Commissioner Robert Walsh of the Department of Small Business Services explains: "We will help you with putting your business plan together. We will help you find capital, access to financing, we will help you find workers for jobs."
The are twelve Workforce 1 and Business Solution Centers throughout the five boroughs. They've just extended their hours to include Saturdays and evenings.
