Campaign '08: Search For Running Mates

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Barack Obama and John McCain are still searching for running mates.

During her farewell speech on Saturday, Hillary Clinton pledged her support for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. "I will work my heart out to make sure Obama is our next president and I hope and pray that all of you will join me in that effort," she said.

But does "working her heart out" include becoming Obama's running mate?

"It's not a job that she's seeking and it's not a job that she's campaigning for, but she's made it clear during the campaign that she can do whatever she can, but this is Senator Obama's decision and his decision alone," said Howard Wolfson, strategist for the New York State Democratic Committee.

The notion of a so-called "dream ticket" has led to a debate among top democrats as to whether Clinton will help or hinder the Obama campaign.

"Look, everybody has some baggage. Hillary Clinton is well known. Certainly she had the popular vote in this election. That is something tremendous, but if you really want a winning ticket, this is it," Sen. Diane Feinstein said.

Meanwhile, John McCain's running mate search has been under way for weeks. Friday, he was seen with Florida governor Charlie Crist touring the Everglades.

Also on the short list is Minnnesota governor Tim Pawlenty. "I want to help him become the president because I think he'd be a great president. If someone came to me to and said that, I'd be honored to be mentioned. It'd be hard to turn that down."

And still generating buzz is former rival Mitt Romney. "He's got a lot of good people to choose from and I trust he will," the former Massachusetts governor said.
