A critic of Gov. Jon Corzine has filed a lawsuit seeking to block New Jersey from borrowing $3.9 billion for school construction without voter approval.
Former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan says he filed the lawsuit Monday because the state's debt is skyrocketing.
Lonegan is considered a possible Republican challenger to Corzine in 2009. He announced that he would file such a lawsuit after Corzine signed the school bill earlier this month.
A message seeking comment from Corzine's office was not immediately returned.
The state Supreme Court has ordered new schools be built in the poorest districts, but Lonegan and others argue that voters should decide whether to borrow the money.
