Rep. Charles Rangel, chairman of the powerful Ways & Means Committee, has been hospitalized in New York with the flu.
Elbert Garcia, an aide to the 77-year-old Harlem Democrat, said Thursday that Rangel was admitted to Columbia-Presbyterian on Tuesday night.
"He got a cold, and it got worse," said Garcia. "He's getting lots of liquids and is doing better and doctors will check out how he's doing and see how he is. If they feel he can get out tonight, he'll get out tonight."
Rangel's most recent public appearance was an affordable housing rally Sunday in Harlem. He has not made any House votes this week.
Elbert said it was unclear if Rangel would still be able to appear in Washington this weekend at an annual congressional dinner, and added that the congressman might do fewer public events than usual until he is fully recovered.
Rangel, a decorated Korean War veteran, took over the tax-writing committee in 2007 after Democrats won control of the House. He is the dean of New York's congressional delegation, having been in office for almost four decades.
