Giuliani Camp Sees Hope In Florida
BARROW BEACH, Fla. (CBS) ―
It's pedal to the metal time in Florida and Rudy Giuliani is pulling out all the stops to win the Republican presidential primary.
He's got his New York cousins campaigning for him.
"Were here to support Rudy. We know he needs it," Giuliani's cousin George Giordano told CBS 2 HD. "This is our time to support Rudy."
Guardian Angels is there too.
"This is make or break time for Rudy," said radio personality Curpis Sliwa.
Giuliani shelved out a big wad of scarce campaign cash on an ad that aired on all of Florida's CBS affiliates right before '60 minutes.'
The ad says "a Giuliani presidency will have two clear goals: turning economic policy to the values of Ronald Reagan, and taking offense against Islamic terrorists.
Recent polls have Giuiliani running third. Campaign aides say a strategy getting Floridians to vote early -- before the other candidates came here to campaign, could give Giuliani a surprise boost.
So far, some 427,000 people have voted early. Team Rudy thinks they got a good chunk of it.
When asked if he can tell what role the early voting would have in his success or failure on Tuesday, Giuliani responded "We think the early voting will go heavily our way for a couple of reasons: first of all we organized an effort to bring out an early vote. Usually you have that effort on an election day, we backed it up to the early voting period. We think it might be something that will help us more some of the experts think."
In Barrow Beach, Giuliani lost the vote of one former Manhattanite, when he snuck out of the door with wife Judith and didn't stop to shake hands.
"I think I'm going to change my vote," said an offended Damien Gilliams.
