Estimating his legal bills will reach $2.5 million, former New York Senate leader Joseph Bruno is asking friends and supporters to contribute to his legal defense fund.
In a letter mailed last week, Bruno is renewing his request for financial support. He has already spent nearly $700,000 from campaign funds for his defense against eight federal fraud charges, and he has a balance of about $700,000 left.
Bruno spokesman Kris Thompson says the fund has dropped references to charity status from its Web site because it doesn't qualify as one.
Bruno, is charged with wire and mail fraud, accused of using his state influence to enrich himself. His trial is continuing Tuesday.
The New York Daily News first reported Bruno's personal plea.
After his retirement, Bruno became chief executive officer of CMA Consulting Services. CMA, an information technology consulting business based in the Albany County suburb of Latham, is headed by Kay McCabe Stafford, the widow of Republican Sen. Ronald Stafford.
