Smith To Albany: Fix NY Ethics Rules Now
Senate Majority Leader Wants Says Government Must Win Back Public Confidence
ALBANY (AP) ―
Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith says the time is now -- not after summer vacation -- for Albany to fix its ethics rules.
Smith says government must win back the public's confidence after a series of scandals. He says Thursday the best time to do that is before the end of the regular session on June 22.
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver is now proposing a version of ethics reform that's different from proposals by Gov. David Paterson and Smith.
Silver and Paterson say reform might have to wait until summer or fall.
Good-government groups say action is desperately needed now. The action follows a report in May by the state inspector general that accused the executive director of the Public Integrity Commission of ethical violations during an investigation.
