Mayor Michael Bloomberg may have won by only 5 percentage points, but he is surprising well-positioned to deliver one of his most important campaign promises: no new taxes.
Bloomberg wasted no time Wednesday. On the morning after he won a controversial third term, he got down to business, meeting with his senior staff to discuss the pressing problems of the day and the way to deliver for New Yorkers for the next four years.
"I think they want open government, honest government, non-partisan government. They want somebody who does what that person believes. The public doesn't want politics as usual, they don't want people to say things that are so obviously said just because it's good politics," he said.
No doubt it was good politics to promise not to raise taxes next year, but the mayor also honestly believes he can deliver.
CBS 2 has learned that because the mayor budgeted conservatively, he's now looking at an unexpected increase in tax revenues of about $120 million.
He also was conservative in estimating Wall Street profits and will see additional cash coming into city coffers from better than expected performance.
"The bottom line is I've got a new job starting on January 1 and I'm going to work as hard as I can to do a good job," he said.
The mayor has also promised to reduce crime and make city schools the envy of people who live in the suburbs. But even with all his careful planning, the city's economy is only as good as the nation's economy and we could be in for more tough times.
Bloomberg has other issues on his agenda, too. He has promised to have the 9/11 memorial opened by the time he leaves office and to have the extension of the 7-train subway line completed as well.
