McGreeveys Scolded By Judge Over Daughter's B-Day

ELIZABETH, N.J. (CBS) ― There were fireworks in court Thursday as New Jersey's former first couple waged another very public chapter in their bitter break-up. This time, the battle centered on a birthday party for the McGreevey's young daughter.

Former Governor James McGreevey and his estranged wife, Dina, went to court Thursday to argue over the scheduling of their daughter's sixth birthday party.
The Judge reprimanded both of them for wasting the court's time:

"When there are family court matters in this building that are so much more important…The hatred they have for each other overrides everything, including their child at this point," said Honorable Judge Karen Cassidy.

The conflict stems from a huge birthday bash McGreevey, who is openly gay, and his partner have planned for his daughter, Jacqueline. In a sit-down interview with CBS 2 News, Dina Matos McGreevey says the birthday falls on the weekend she has custody of their daughter.

"Coordinating is not a problem, the problem is that he goes ahead and schedules whether it's birthday parties or trips when he clearly does not have time with Jacqueline and he assumed as he has in the past he'd get away with it," said Dina Matos McGreevey.

During the hearing, Matos-McGreevey shook her head as the former Governor spoke. In the end, the Judge sided with the parenting coordinator, saying Jacqueline can attend the party but then go straight back to her mom's custody.

"I as a father wanted to make a special weekend for my daughter - Dina has her on her birthday weekend," said the former Governor.

Since McGreevey filed the motion, the Judge ordered him to pay for his wife's legal fees for the day. The McGreeveys have bickered in court since their split in 2004. Their divorce is scheduled for trial next May.
