Gay Marriage Supporters, Protesters Hit Streets
ALBANY (CBS) ―
Opposing demonstrations clashed Sunday in Midtown Manhattan.
Both sides hit the streets to push their views over the effort to legalize same-sex marriage in New York.
They were two opposing views on Governor David Paterson's gay marriage bill.
"He created man and woman man and woman should be together," same-sex marriage opponent Marilyn Lopez said. "Even though he loves the sinner, He does not agree with a life of sin."
"I would really just like to talk to them and ask why I don't deserve equal rights," gay marriage advocate Laura Dukey said.
Sunday's rally in support of Gov. Paterson filled the streets and included many celebrities.
"It's the side of history, and he's going to be remembered as a great leader," same-sex marriage supporter Daniel Choi said. "We need to thank him and stand with him."
Another huge protest was organized by Latino clergy, including State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr., who is a minister.
Sen. Diaz warned the governor that, even though Latinos traditionally vote Democrat, this is not the time to take their votes for granted.
"If we could move people to come here, we could move people to tell them who to vote for," Sen. Diaz said.
"Each one of us will vote against him next time around," Miguel Lugo said.
A recent Quinnipiac poll finds that more than six out of 10 New Yorkers are in favor of legalizing civil unions for same-sex couples, but the population is split on marriage.
The governor says he is doing what he believes is right.
