Poll: Spitzer's Approval Rating Continues To Fall

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ― Nearly half of New York voters -- 47 percent -- believe Gov. Eliot Spitzer can become a "kinder, gentler governor," according to a new poll released Wednesday.

But the Quinnipiac University poll also found 30 percent of voters don't think it's possible for the governor to lighten up, while 23 percent are undecided.

Overall, Spitzer's approval rating was 37 percent, down from 47 percent in Quinnipiac's October survey. A Siena College Research Institute poll released Monday found similar numbers, with a 36 percent approval rating.

Quinnipiac also reported 62 percent of voters disapproved of Spitzer's handling of immigration issues. Even 51 percent of Democrats disapproved.

Spitzer was elected in 2006 with record support -- nearly 70 percent of the vote. Since January, his popularity has flagged as scandal and unpopular policy have plagued his administration.

Senate Republican leader Joseph Bruno has accused two of Spitzer's aides of trying to discredit him by using state police to track his travels, an incident that remains under investigation by the state Public Integrity Commission.

Last month, amid concerns his position threatened to unhinge Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential bid, Spitzer surrendered on his plan to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

The Quinnipiac poll surveyed 1,083 voters from December 4-10 and the margin of error was plus or minus 3 percent.
