Now Airing On Screen Near You: 'Love Client No. 9'

Spitzer Jokes Burn Up Late Night Television, Internet

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Inevitably, of course, the late night comics have had a field day with the Gov. Eliot Spitzer prostitution ring saga. But they're not the only ones. Spitzer's scandal is burning up the Internet.

You can find joke threads on the subject popping up all over cyberspace.

"I've acted in a way that violates my obligation to my family," the embattled governor said during his shocking news conference on Monday.

You knew it was coming. David Letterman didn't waste any time.

His "Top 10 Eliot Spitzer Excuses" included several zingers:

"I thought Bill Clinton legalized this years ago," Letterman said to laughter.

And the jokes have been flying ever since – from the usual and unusual suspects.

Letterman: "Number 8 … Just trying to help the economy; No. 7 …have you ever been to Albany?"

Jon Stewart from "The Daily Show": "The big story tonight ... known to anyone with a TV or a Google alert set to 'Prostitute.'"

Then there's the YouTube video of some guy getting his five minutes of fame:

"He took his troubles to a prostitute ... His image as a public crusader's moot."

"Governor Spitzer, resign, resign, resign ... a wire tape reveals he's ... Love Client #9."

All this continues the time honored tradition of exploiting political pitfalls.

Remember these?

"I am not a crook." – Richard Nixon

"I did not have sexual relations with that woman." -- Bill Clinton

Stewart added one parting shot.

"Interestingly enough ... he was caught on a wiretap ... the kind most likely ordered by the law and order Governor of New York ... Eliot Spitzer."

No joke.
