Dolan To Immerse Himself In All Things NYC

Never Shy To Chastise Politicians, New Archbishop Builds Early Bridges With Calls To Paterson, Bloomberg

Dolan Blasted Pelosi, Biden On Abortion In Sept. 2008

NEW YORK (CBS) ― So what kind of leader will the new archbishop be and what problems will he face?

John Cardinal O'Connor used to have press conferences on Sunday at St. Patrick's that were well attended by the press and well listened to by everybody.

Former Mayor Ed Koch praised O'Connor for using his position as a bully pulpit to speak out on a wide range of issues.

New archbishop Timothy Dolan served notice Monday that he will follow in Cardinal O'Connor's footsteps and embrace a broad public role here.

"We're just not sacristy people, not sanctuary people. We're just not Sunday people. Boy, we want to bring that into the world," Dolan said.

The new leader of the New York Archdiocese said he intends to fully involve himself in all things Gotham.

"I'm going to look forward to being part of everything in New York, from the New York Yankees to the museums to the soup kitchens to the orphanages to the hospitals," Dolan said.

Archbishop Dolan faces a host of issues from preventing the closing of Catholic schools and social service agencies to raising funds in these tough economic times for nine hospitals that treat about a million people annually.

"You know one of the things they call bishops is the beggar in chief so hah ha ha," Dolan said.

And although he hasn't shied away from going after politicians whose views he disagrees with -- last September he lambasted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and then-Sen. Joe Biden on abortion – on Monday was all about building bridges. He spoke to Gov. David Paterson and called Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Mayor Koch.

"I said your eminence whatever it is that I can do to be of assistance to you and make your life easier just tell me," Koch said.

So it seems that the new archbishop intends to have a big impact both on the archdiocese and the city.

Another issue facing Archbishop Dolan is the people who still want to sue for sexual abuse at the hands of priests. The archbishop said he wouldn't comment on that issue until he studies it more closely.
