CBS 2 Presents 'Eye On The Storm' Special

NEW YORK On Saturday, January 12, at 7:00 p.m., WCBS-TV presents "Eye on the Storm: Extreme Winter Weather," a half-hour special featuring reports from CBS2 HD's weather experts Lonnie Quinn, John Elliott, and Elise Finch, along with a variety of segments on all aspects of winter weather. The special also contains exhilarating footage and helpful demonstrations, as well as tips provided by CBS2 HD's weather team on how to save on home heating bills throughout bitter cold conditions.

"Weather in the tri-state area can be unpredictable and dangerous, especially in the winter months" said Peter Dunn, President and General Manager, WCBS-TV. "We want our viewers to be informed on the best ways to stay safe during extreme weather conditions."

During this informative half-hour, Lonnie Quinn breaks down the different types of weather conditions that can strike the tri-state area during the winter months including blizzards, nor'easters, ice storms, and wind storms. Additionally, CBS2 outlines the characteristics of each of these storms and explains why they are dangerous and how to stay safe in the event that one occurs. In conjunction with CBS2 HD's exclusive partnership with the Weather Channel, Quinn also travels with The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore to the top of Mount Washington in New Hampshire. Notorious for its extreme conditions, wind speeds at over 230 miles per hour have been recorded at this massive peak- the highest wind speeds ever recorded. While at Mount Washington, Lonnie and Jim interview the scientists and storm chasers who study and feed the models that help predict hazardous winter conditions.

In addition, John Elliott spends one-on-one time with the Department of Sanitation in order to show viewers how they prepare for all forms of winter weather as well as what high-tech tools are now in use. John also experiences first-hand what it's like to test a car's abilities in icy conditions. AAA and a major tire distributor give John driving lessons by putting him in a car directly on the ice at an ice rink in order to illustrate the do's and don'ts in slippery conditions.

Elise Finch also reports on some of the worst storms to ever hit the area with a historical perspective including black and white photos and archival film footage from several of the tri-state area's worst winters. Furthermore, Dr. Holly Phillips joins Elise to explain the dangers of hypothermia and frostbite and explains how to stay protected against these harsh conditions.

The program will be streamed live on wcbstv.com, which will also archive the show and feature extended interviews with key participants.

An encore presentation of "Eye on the Storm: Extreme Winter Weather" will air on January 13th at 11:30am.
