MoneySaver: Finding Back-To-School Bargains
KEARNY, N.J. (CBS) ―
It's time for the kids to go back to school and many parents are wondering where the kids can find back-to-school bargains.
With her son's back-to-school list in hand, Christine Rivera is on the lookout for deals because she just lost her job.
"I have no choice, but to budget," she told CBS 2.
Kids and moms alike tell CBS 2 that discount chains offer the lowest prices on school supplies.
At the WalMart in Kearny, we found shoppers who found great deals on school uniforms.
"The shirts were $6 and the pants were $12.99," one shopper said.
Even trendy teen t-shirts and jeans, as well as backpacks were filling carts.
"Ten dollars, you can't go wrong for ten bucks," said shopper Wanda Hicks.
"The pencils, the glue sticks were 30 cents, which is really good, and the folders were 25 cents," said shopper Michelle Cadeau.
Target's another favorite for bargain seekers. We found school uniforms starting at $9.99, markers for $1, and crayons for 25 cents. The Clifton store even has a back-to-college section.
Many teens say they're sacrificing brand names this year for nice looking clothes that cost less.
"I try to help my mom by looking for stuff that's cheap and looks nice," said North Arlington resident Jennifer Cruz.
But some moms say don't discount the outlet stores, including the ones in Secaucus.
"I've got some tops here, they were only $2.50," said Queens resident Janet Gonzalez.
And the best part of shopping in New Jersey, she said, is no sales tax on clothes – a big plus in a tough economy. Some parents say another big trend this year is shopping at consignment stores.
