Consumer Report: Saving Money On Skincare

NEW YORK (CBS) ― There are thousands of skin care products on the market, promising to make you look younger and wrinkle-free.

CBS 2 got some advice on where your money can best be spent to get the best results.

When it comes to skin care, drugstores offer lower-priced options, but little guidance. In department stores, you'll need to shop counter-to-counter.

"I try to find the best quality for the best price," one New York resident says.

"I love to try everything," says another beauty aficionado. "I'm not loyal to any product."

"People are absolutely hell-bent on getting performance out of their skincare products," Space NK founder Nicky Kinnaird says. "It's all about value for money, at whatever price point."

Beauty emporiums can offer selected products from the best that brands have to offer.

"When it comes to facial skincare, that's where I would really invest as much as I felt comfortable doing because that's what's on display," Kinnaird says. "That's what's exposed to the elements, day-in, day-out."

For a cleanser, look for one that removes makeup, exfoliates, cleanses, and tones. Some retail a for as much as $60, but can last for three months do the job of several products.

"People love the fact that it can make life so simple and easy and multitasks at the same time," Kinnaird says. "Why have a ton of different things to get to the same result if I can do that with one product so much easier and better?"

Another money-saving multitasker is a good moisturizer that works for both day and night.

Another tip: look for products that extend time between visits to a spa or dermatologist, such as home microdermabrasion treatments, and specially textured cloths that exfoliate your skin, wet or dry.

According to Kinnaird, the best place to spend money on skin care is on a good sunscreen.

"Work on the assumption that no question is too stupid to ask," she says. "We hear everything, and the more we hear from the customer, the closer we can come to the perfect definition of what's going to work for them."

Another great place to save is on hand and body products. Look for simple Shea butters or glycerin lotions – they're effective moisturizers and don't cost an arm and a leg.
