On Monday night dozens of animals were rescued from a loving home that quickly became a nightmare.
The pets became just too much to handle for one woman.
Frankelli Rosa and his Brentwood Long Island neighbors say the elderly woman living at 20 Campion St. had a love for animals that exceeded her ability to care for them.
On Monday the fire department and the ASPCA had to go into the home to rescue dozens of small animals.
When we arrived we saw the condition inside of the house," Capt. Robert Aversano said. "And the fire department declared it a hazmat scene. A hazmat went in and declared it safe to go in, but they wanted us to go in with protective clothing and we have air assistant breathing apparel on our agents."
The fire department was originally called to the home for a circuit breaker issue and oil burner fire when they discovered the small home filled with small animals and covered in animal urine and feces. The elderly woman was taken to the hospital.
Late Monday night officials say they recovered a total of 24 animals from the home, including four cats, two kittens, a dog, turtles, hamsters, finches and other birds. A dead pigeon and mouse were also removed.
Neighbor Juan Garcia sympathized for the pet owner.
"It's too much. If she can't clean the house she not supposed to have too much animals," Garcia said.
The Brentwood Fire Department said it believes more animals may be hiding inside the home, but the cold weather forced them to halt the operation Monday night. They're expected to continue the recovery Tuesday.
If you'd like to help these animals, you can contact the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722.
