CBS 2 HD Explores Common Beauty Myths

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Beauty tips passed from mother to daughter and friend to friend are always well intentioned, but sometimes they're flat out wrong.

Now, CBS 2 HD will separate the fact from fiction as we reveal the truth behind some beauty myths.

We all learned some so-called "beauty tricks" growing up, but to get the facts straight, we turned to the experts -- from what you should know about moisturizers, to what you think you do about cucumbers.

"I'm so sad to say that putting cucumbers on your eyelids to help with dark under-eye circles is not true. That's a myth," said Molly Nover-Baker, beauty director at Women's Health magazine. "There's virtually no benefit to taking cucumber slices and using them unless they've been chilled. It's the coldness that has the benefit, not the cucumber itself."

Next, as you lather up your hair, can you use shampoo on your body, too?

"Shampoos have similar cleansing agents than your average body wash so you can use it to wash away dirt grime and oil from your skin," Nover-Baker said.

And what's the truth behind this popular myth: does shaving make hair come in thicker and darker?

"When you're shaving all you are doing is razing off the ends of your hair. You're not disturbing the follicle in any way, so because you're not doing that you're not affecting the way it grows back. All you're doing is snipping the edge," Nover-Baker said.

And no matter how much you tweeze, it won't stop hair from completely growing back, but it can damage the follicle and slow down the growth.

"I guess I better keep tweezing," one woman told CBS 2 HD.

And we all know everyone needs to use a moisturizer, right? Well experts say not true. Oilier complexions are sometimes better off without. However, everyone needs sunscreen, even indoors. That's not a myth, it's a must. UV rays can penetrate windows, so protection indoors is critical, too.

And finally can it be true that antiperspirant can get rid of ingrown hairs?

"One swipe over top of hair and it will help that pore to open up so that hair can pop out and you can tweeze it, pluck it, wax it, whatever you do to remove it," Nover-Baker said.

Some other beauty myths:

* Can shampoos correct split ends?

No. The only way to get rid of them is to cut them off.

* Can creams kick your cellulite to the curb?

If only. Nothing in a bottle will get rid of it, only make the area appear smoother and more hydrated.
