CBS 2 HD Presents: Computer Makeover

Experts: Don't Spend Your Money Without Knowing For Certain You Will Like How You'll Look; Go Online And Play

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Women spend about $61 billion between the makeup counter and hair salon, and yet we all have stories of haircuts and lipsticks that have gone horribly wrong.

Now there may be a fix. You can change your look before you even spend a dime.

Red Carpet looks are all the rage -- from Jennifer to Anne to Rachel and more -- but how many times have you bought the latest "it" color only to see it's an "ick" color on you?

"No bad hair days. No more why did I spend $200 on a haircut that I hate?" said Rachel Hayes, editor-in-chief of DailyMakeover.com.

Hayes made it her mission to help women put their best face forward -- without dropping cash at a hair salon, without ever trying on so much as a lipstick at the makeup counter.

Instead, try out a rainbow of colors for eyes, hair and lips for free, by just using your computer.

"Now it's my turn to try out a new look. Will I be a red head, brunette? Can I try out that season's red lipstick color or that dark smoky eye? Now's the time to find out," Hayes said.

Pull back your hair, take off your makeup, and upload a picture … all for free. Then pucker up with a berry pink lip and check out the full palette of hair colors and looks from The Aniston long blonde braid to the Ginnifer sassy brunette with smoky eye and sheer lip, or the redheaded Rachel Evan Wood complete with the season's red lip.

"The makeover sites are the biggest trends right now," said Eleanor Langston, beauty editor at Self magazine.

Langston said the myriad of Web sites that let you try out all the latest looks are a great start to a new you.

"Just go on there and try out these trends virtually, without having to spend any money," Langston said.

But Langston warns don't click and commit. You still need to try the actual makeup before you buy, since the depth of color known as pigment levels can be deceptive.

"It might not look how it does on Rihanna or these big celebs," Langston said.

But you can get closer to that Hollywood look, even if you don't earn a celebrity paycheck.

We've put links to several of the makeover sites here, herehere and here.
