HealthWatch: Turn Back 'Hands' Of Time

For Dramatic Results, Dermatologist Suggests Fillers

NEW YORK (CBS) ― It's not easy to turn back the hands of time, but it's possible to reverse the effects of time on your hands. You can get a younger look in just a matter of minutes.

Paula Moizel knows as we get older, nothing is picture perfect. But hands down, these are where age really shows.

"I have lost volume. The skin is thinner and I do see a lot of veins and some wrinkling and it would be so nice to get rid of it," Moizel said.

"You know many times, a woman's face, like your face, looks so youthful, but the hands, many times, show age," dermatologist Dr. David Amron said.

Amron used the filler Radiesse to plump up Paula's hands. The procedure takes five minutes and can have dramatic results.

Radiesse was approved by the Food and Drug Administration two years ago for smile lines around the face. But shortly after, many doctors found it worked on other areas as well, including the hands.

"Well, I really think Radiesse to the back of the hands is very safe. And there really are very few complications," Dr. Amron said. "Actually, I haven't had any complications from it."

There's a small chance of a little bruise. Radiesse can also form a little nodule under the skin that will tend to soften up within a few months.

The cost of the procedure ranges from $1,200 to $2,000, and results last up to a year.

"Looks much better. Looks smoother, looks plumper," Dr. Amron said.

"I feel fantastic," Paula said. "This was the easiest procedure and I don't think my hands have ever looked better."

Currently, Radiesse only has FDA approval for use in the face. But it's use in hands is widely considered to be safe and effective. Government approval for this use is expected soon.

Laser resurfacing and prescription fade creams for age spots are also popular treatments to keep hands looking young.
