Prostitution Ring Bust May Be Biggest In Years

Attorney: Suspect Rumored To Hold 'Largest Black Book In America'

'Madam's Own Book Proposal May Have Done Her In'

NEW YORK (CBS) ― The accused madam in an East Side prostitution ring may have been brought down by her own words. Comments about the operation the DA used against Kristen Davis were taken from a book proposal she circulated recently. As CBS 2 HD has learned, she may have timed her book to take advantage of interest in the Eliot Spitzer scandal.

When Davis, 32, was brought into court to answer prostitution and money laundering charges, the district attorney quoted her own words to ask for an astounding $10 million bail, for a case that under normal conditions would warrant a $100,000 bond. The judge settled on $2 million. Here are the words believed to have done her in:

"This is the memoir of a madam running the world's largest escort agency that grosses over $6 million per year, conducts business in over 5 countries and works with famous models and clients."

The "memoir" is a book proposal Davis had sent out to publishers about her alleged prostitution business, trying to cash in on post-Spitzer scandal interest in call girls. Sources say however, she has no involvement with the scandal that brought down former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer. Even her own lawyer appeared to feed the hype:

"Because of rumors that she was Spitzer's personal 'Madam Butterfly' and because of rumors that she had the largest "black book" in America," said Davis' attorney, Mark Heller.

Except, sources say, all the "rumors" her lawyer cited are all found in Davis' own book proposal.

Inside the apartments of 229 E. 53rd Street is where the young prostitutes and their clients would meet, according to police. Authorities arrested Davis Tuesday, who's accused of arranging the meetings and charging customers up to $1,200 for an hour of her alleged employees' time.

Residents were surprised to hear such criminal activity was going on in the building and at another building on Third Avenue. Davis was arrested on Tuesday in her Murray Hill apartment, a much nicer building than the ones her alleged prostitutes were said to have conducted their business in.

"She is presently an individual who has a college degree, has 30 credits towards her master's degree in psychology and I believe she is an entrepreneur and business person in the financial world," said Mark Heller, Davis' attorney.
