Two people were hospitalized in the Bath Beach section of Brooklyn after they were burned with acid allegedly thrown on them by their apartment building's superintendent during a dispute.
The dispute apparently occurred between Alberto Sanchez, a tenant in the building located at 8757 Bay 16th Street, and his super, Leonicio DeJesus. Neighbors say the two have been bickering for years, before turning violent Tuesday morning.
According to Edgar Gonzalez, another tenant, Sanchez and DeJesus were arguing when Sanchez came at the super with a knife. That's when DeJesus splashed an acid -- some kind of concentrated form of Drano liquid -- in Sanchez's face, in what some are saying was in self-defense.
The acid also came in contact with Sanchez' girlfriend, Millie DeJesus.
"I hear the tenant arguing that he is gonna kill the super, that 'I am gonna kill him,'" said Gonzalez.
Both victims suffered burns from the acid and were taken to the burn unit at University Hospital on Staten Island and are listed in stable condition.
Friends of the two burn victims say the super had threatened both of them in the past.
"She's been threatened that they were gonna throw acid or kill her and her boyfriend," said a woman who only identified herself as Wanda, in fear of retaliation. "She'd been telling me she feared for her life and her boyfriend's life."
The acid was said to be so strong, the clothes -- still scattered at the scene -- weren't just ripped off the two victims bodies, but came off from the acid itself. A dark t-shirt at the scene was actually on the female victim and melted off flesh.
"They needed to be de-coned, washed down and they were removed by EMS to the hospital," said FDNY Chief Robert Strakosch.
Mr. DeJesus, 62, was charged with assault for allegedly throwing the acid, while Sanchez, 44, was charged with menacing and criminal possession of a weapon. An investigation into the case is ongoing.
