Mayor Michael Bloomberg is taking nothing for granted as New York City voters decide whether eight years is enough.
Bloomberg is making a bid for a controversial third term against Democratic challenger and NYC Comptroller Bill Thompson.
Mayor Bloomberg walked into P.S. 6 on E. 81st Street Tuesday to cast his ballot for the man he thinks should run the city for the next four years.
"When I come out, they're going to ask me who I voted for," Bloomberg said.
"Say you don't know," a poll worker joked.
The mayor was inside the booth for about a minute before he pulled the lever back to record his choices. Then, it was a pop of flashbulbs and an apology to poll workers for disrupting them with the entourage of cameras.
"We'll get out of everybody's hair sorry for the inconvenience," Bloomberg said.
Polls show the mayor leading Thompson by a comfortable margin, but Bloomberg is taking nothing for granted. His campaign is mounting a big "get out the vote" operation.
As for the mayor himself, he seemed calm and in good humor as he bought an Italian pastry and a cup of coffee from parents at the school.
Challenger Bill Thompson voted at P.S. 144 in Harlem, then ran into NY Senator Bill Perkings.
"This is a Democratic day, this is a turnout day, no clouds," Perkins said.
Thompson predicted victory over Bloomberg.
"What you can see in the polls are the trends, our own polling shows that the gap is a lot closer," Thompson said. "The one thing we're seeing in trends is that the gap is closing and continues to close."
Mayor Bloomberg is truly taking nothing for granted, and is prepared for either victory or defeat. Aides say he has two speeches prepared one if he wins, the other if he loses and he is practicing both.
A poll Monday showed Mayor Bloomberg with a 12-point lead over Thompson.
