Buffest & Bravest, But Incognito

Popular NYC Firefighter Calendar Is Back, But Participants Hide Identities Out Of Fear Of Reprisal From FDNY

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Caught up in controversy last year, the New York City Fire Department said it was getting out of the beefcake calendar business.

But now the boys are back and hotter than ever, but a tad more modest. And with good reason.

The buffest and the bravest are back in a calendar that's not quite as revealing as those before. Can you spot the difference?

To many, it seemed like a hot experience.

"Awesome, totally," one wide-eyed female New Yorker said.

"They're hunks," added another.

But when last year's FDNY calendar cover boy showed up sans everything on a "Guys Gone Wild" video, FDNY brass decided to put the kibosh on future calendars.

"The beef is back," one New Yorker said after getting a peek at the snappy images.

Yep, now comes a new calendar – "City of the Brave" – featuring a fresh crop of pumped, flexed and shredded firefighters, but whose faces are shadowed or concealed.

It's to keep them anonymous since the calendar is being done without the FDNY's blessing.

"I want to see it all (laugh). Well not everything but ... (laugh)," another woman said.

It's the brainchild of publisher Katherine Kostreva, who says many of the hunks were reticent to reveal their true identity, fearful of reprisal or getting burned.

"They think that the firefighters might possibly go after them or fire them," Kostreva said.

Kostreva said a portion of the proceeds from the calendar will go to help families of firefighters who have died.

So what sayeth the FDNY? Are the boys in hot water?

An FDNY spokesperson would only say: This calendar is not sanctioned by the New York City Fire Department."

And coming to stores in September.

If you can't wait, the publisher told CBS 2 HD the calendar can be found now online.
