Tri-Staters Hitting The Roads, Rails For Holiday
Despite Economic Woes, Tri-Staters On The Move For Holiday Weekend

NEW YORK (CBS) ―
The Fourth of July is typically a busy travel holiday. And despite the economic woes crippling many across the country, this year is expected to be no different, thanks to cheaper air fares world wide and an overall yearning to get out and about. But as CBS 2's Jay Dow is finding out, many tri-staters are hitting the roads and the rails instead.
Deeply discounted fares and a perception that traveling by rail is less stressful; it's an interesting combination that surely contributed to a packed Penn Station Friday morning.
"It's just more comfortable and it's easier to travel with the children," said Bronx resident Nancy Santiago.
A not so subtle jab at the headaches that typically come with air travel. In fact, data shows that despite the tough economic climate, most travelers prefer taking to the rails or the roads.
AAA estimates travelers will spend about $1,100 per household this holiday weekend.
"We found in the mid-Atlantic area, which incorporates New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, that travel is actually up 0.1 percent, which basically means it is steady compared to last year," AAA spokeswoman Michele Mount says.
Steady, but sometimes slow.
For Candy Bishop, it is a marathon: all the way from Maine to Virginia.
"We got stuck three hours in the Bronx to go ten miles," Bishop says.
But for millions of families, a little traffic is an acceptable price to pay for saving a few travel dollars.
