ME: 6 Heat-Related Deaths Confirmed In NYC
3 In Queens, 3 In Brooklyn Confirmed Dead By Medical Examiner
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
Six New York City residents died from complications due to the four-day long heat wave that plagued the city this week, CBS 2 has learned.
The medical examiner's office confirmed Wednesday that three people in Queens an 89-year-old man, a 70-year-old woman, and an 84-year-old woman had died. Three others in Brooklyn a 57-year-old man, a 74-year-old woman, and an 84-year-old man were also confirmed dead.
Five of the six were found inside their homes.
The deaths were caused by hyperthermia, according to Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner..
It's not yet known when each person died.
Borakove says five of the victims were found on Tuesday.
The city was overcome by four straight days of temperatures that reached the upper-90s, including a record 96 degrees in Central Park on Tuesday. Heat indices were much higher due to hazy and humid conditions.
