Rocks Tossed From Moving Car On Rt. 22 In N.J.

HILLSIDE, N.J. (CBS) ― Police say a suspect is throwing rocks from a moving vehicle on Route 22 in New Jersey. The crime is causing serious injuries to drivers and costing them thousands of dollars in damages.

Police in Hillside are investigating a very dangerous crime. They say someone has been throwing paver stones at cars. At least nine people have been injured, including a woman who was so badly cut she had to get two staples to her head.

Police say the stones are being thrown from another car.

"They all seem to be coming through the front windshield at the vehicle right at the driver's head," said Hillside Detective Matthew Ross.

According to police, there have been 18 incidents since June 8 between the Union and Newark borders. The rocks have been tossed at all hours of the day and night. Drivers are on high alert.

"I certainly hope they catch these people. It seems terrible cause you are injuring innocent people," said Union resident Tom Kirschenbaum.

The injuries to the victims range from glass in the face to a blow to the head.

"The rock went so hard into window it bounced off the front seat and hit her in the back of the head," said Ross.

A lot of the paver stones are still on Route 22. CBS 2 found one along the roadway. Police say the victims have no description on the car of the suspects. They're asking the public for help. Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call the Hillside Police Department.
