SPCA Rescued Dogs To Go Up For Adoption On L.I.

NORTHPORT, N.Y. (CBS) ― Tuesday night CBS 2 brought you the story of the 56 dogs, parrot and baby squirrels found in deplorable conditions inside a Long Island home. In less than 24 hours, more than 700 people have asked to adopt the animals, which are presently under doctor's care.

The dozens of rescued dogs are recovering in a special mobile animal hospital. Veterinarians have bathed and nursed the animals back to good health. A hospital spokesperson said only one dog had to undergo serious medical treatment, while another one delivered 7 puppies to the world.

Seven puppies and 49 adult dogs, believed to be purebred Shihtzus, Yorkshire Terriers, and Pekingese, were living in their own filth inside Irene Monroig's East Northport home at 36 Wicks Road.

Monroig ran from media cameras as SPCA crews removed the dogs, a parrot and two baby squirrels from her home Tuesday. The conditions were so bad rescuers geared up in hazmat suits and the fire department brought in massive fans to aerate the home.

Monroig has been charged with animal cruelty on Wednesday, and if convicted she could face a year in prison.

"We are trying to determine if it was a puppy mill - don't know yet if she was hoarding - but why would someone have that many animals, mostly purebreds," said Chief Roy Gross of Suffolk SPCA.

The 56 dogs, ranging in age from a few weeks to 7 years were seized by the SPCA at Monroig's residence, wallowing in filth, feces and mold. According to authorities, Monroig has vanity plates on her Lexus and works at 3 animal hospitals.

Monroig's neighbors support her.

"She loves animals is all..."

But the Town Supervisor says Monroig's code violations are serious crimes.

"The house has been condemned..." said Huntington Town Supervisor Frank Petrone.

The dogs will all be examined by vets, spayed and neutered, before being made available for adoption next week. The animals are being cared for at the Huntington Town Shelter.
