Heavy Rains Strand Hundreds At NYC Airports
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
The heavy rains and winds are causing big delays at all three area airports. CBS 2 spoke to stranded airline travelers who are keeping an eye on the storm at LaGuardia Airport.
There are currently delays of one hour or more at LaGuardia, with lots of flights cancelled, it's just one more hurdle for hundreds who had to endure a rough night on Wednesday.
A night sleeping on the cold, hard floor of the main terminal at LaGuardia will soon be just a memory for three generations of the Lynch family of North Carolina, but it will always be a bad memory:
"It was an absolute nightmare. It was freezing cold. We finally got blankets at 1 a.m. We're so ready to go home," said Elisa Lynch.
Just one voice out of hundreds of members of the blue blanket brigade stranded and sleeping their flights cancelled because of the stormy weather. 9-year-old Lucas Walls slept soundly on top of an air conditioner while his father worried about how he'll get his brood back to Denver.
"We flew in overseas. We've been awake for over 24 hours," said disgruntled traveler Don Walls.
And the Pickets are trying to fly to Boston, but what an ordeal, a night sleeping on the floor, while Boston is only a couple hours away.
"We're only a few hours away but there were no rental cars and no hotel rooms," said Ambra Picket.
When they woke up Thursday morning, they were back on line, trying to book tickets on another flight after theirs was cancelled.
As is always the case, if you are heading to LaGuardia, check with your carrier because rough weather is expected for the new few hours.
Air travelers are also experiencing problems at Kennedy Airport and Newark-Liberty. If you're heading to the airport, be warned, you may be there longer than expected.
