N.J. Community On High Alert After Home Sex Attack
Glen Rock Police Searching For Would-Be Rapist
GLEN ROCK, N.J. (CBS) ―
A New Jersey neighborhood is on edge on Monday as a would-be rapist is on the loose. Police say the suspect entered a home in Glen Rock and attacked a 17-year-old girl as she was sleeping insider her bedroom. Now police are searching for the intruder.
As the teenage girl lay sleeping, a man snuck into her home through an unlocked door and climbed up the stairs to her room, crawling into her bed.
"She wakes up to the man's hands inside her pajamas on her chest," said Glen Rock Police Captain Frederick Stahman.
She was startled of course, but as a student of karate she knew how to defend herself. As her attacker began to force a sock into her mouth to keep her quiet, she fought back.
"She punched him and scraped him and pulled his hair, and like I said, they rolled on the floor. The suspect was able to get up off the floor and fled down the stairs," said Stahman.
The recent high school graduate even chased her attacked down the stairs, police said, but he escaped through the same sliding glass door he came in. But with the evidence the man left behind, police feel confident they'll find the person who seemed to be very familiar with the girl's home.
"It could have very easily been an acquaintance, a fellow student, maybe even a friend that sort of knew the layout of the house," Stahman added.
Residents of Glen Rock are shocked by what happened not only is it a safe town, it's the kind of place where people still leave their doors unlocked.
"You just don't think of it. It just doesn't happen here," said neighbor Carol Ann Hector.
Police are also looking into the possibility the attacker might have been attending one of the many graduation parties going on this past Saturday night prior to the attack. The victim told police that she smelled alcohol on the man's breath.
