3 Local Students Charged In Tulane Hazing Incident

Fraternity Brothers Accused Of Pouring Scalding, Pepper-Laced Water On Pledges

RYE, N.Y. (CBS) ― Three college students from the area are facing serious charges after apparently taking part in an alleged hazing incident that involved members of a Tulane University fraternity burning pledges with water.

Ten Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity brothers in all face various charges including felony battery for allegedly pouring scalding, pepper-laced water on several fraternity pledges, two of whom were burned so badly they needed medical attention.

New Orleans police say the incident happened April 25 at the Pi Kappa Alpha, also known as "Pike," house during a hazing ritual. A lawyer for one of the alleged victims says his client was told to lie about what happened.

The three suspects from the tri-state were identified as Joe Lorono, 20, of Rye, N.Y.; Kevin Dunn, 20, of Bellmore, N.Y.; and William Dougherty, 20, of Voorhees, N.J.

Lorono is a recent graduate of Rye High School, where his brother, Frank, is currently a senior. Their father, also named Joe, is a very successful Westchester home builder.

At the Lorono family home, the accused student appeared to be inside, but wouldn't answer the door, and neighbors declined to comment.

Dunn, who wasn't home when CBS 2 attempted to speak with him, has been in trouble with the law before. Two years ago he was arrested for assaulting another Tulane student. He pleaded guilty and was given a 90-day suspended sentence.

Tulane University says the 10 suspects remained enrolled pending resolution of the charges against them.

The national Pi Kappa Alpha organization has disbanded the Tulane chapter and declared the actions of the fraternity brothers "nothing short of reprehensible."
