CBS 2 HD spent part of Wednesday talking to a Yankees fan that's seen it all, and now is hoping to witness history again when the Bronx Bombers take on the Phillies in Game 6 of the World Series.
Like clockwork Wednesday morning, Bill "Pee Wee" Scheidt was waiting near the front of the line outside Yankee Stadium to buy his tickets to Game 6. "Pee Wee," a famous face to Yankee fans, waited along with dozens of others for more than 24 hours before finally emerging with two coveted tickets.
"I'm a young fella. I'm only 85 and I've been coming here 68 years," Scheidt said, adding when asked how he managed to get through a day waiting on line, "Oh yeah this is nothing. I was in 1996 38 hours and it was 10,000 behind me."
And CBS 2 HD was there in '96 when "Pee Wee" camped out for tickets to the World Series battle between the Bronx Bombers and the Atlanta Braves. Scheidt's true blue loyalty even landed him a guest spot on the Late Show with David Letterman.
Of the 12 Yankee World Series championships he has attended in his lifetime, 1996 captured his fondest memory.
"When that ball player rode the horse, if you remember that," Scheidt said.
That ballplayer was Yankee third basemen Wade Boggs, who joined this living fan legend's long list of Yankee favorites.
"I saw the best play. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio," Scheidt said.
He said he's looking forward to being a part of a winning era at the new Yankee Stadium.
"Over here it's a little more tension as you walk in. There's so much security. Over there you did what you wanted to do. It was all gentlemen. Today it's a lot different," Scheidt said.
But he said some things will never change.
"I'm an old time Yankee, and I'll die a Yankee and I was born a Yankee, so here I am," Scheidt said.
What's more, Scheidt said if the Yankees lose Wednesday night he will walk out of the stadium and right back to the ticket booth, where he'll wait on line for Thursday's Game 7.
