The 2009 World Champion New York Yankees celebrated their 27th World Series Championship on Friday with a ticker-tape parade in lower Manhattan. The city honored the Bronx Bombers with a parade through the legendary "Canyon of Heroes" before Mayor Michael Bloomberg presented the team with keys to the city at City Hall. Here are images from the parade.
The New York Yankees were back in the postseason in 2009 and in search of their first World Championship since 2000 and 27th World Series title overall. The Bronx Bombers made quick work of the Minnesota Twins in the American League Division Series with a 3-0 series sweep. They then took on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, winning the series 4 games to 2, to advance to the World Series against the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies. It was a tough battle, but the Bronx Bombers pulled out the series in Game 6 for the 2009 World Series Championship.
Hideki Matsui drove in four runs with a two-run homer and two-run single off Pedro Martinez, and the New York Yankees led the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 after three innings in Game 6 on Wednesday night as they tried to wrap up their 27th championship.
With the Bronx Bombers back in the World Series, Yankees fans are out in full force, decking themselves out in pinstripes as a show of team support.
