The father of Al Jolson's character in the 1927 film "The Jazz Singer" wanted him to be a cantor at the family's synagogue. But Jakie Rabinowitz wanted to sing jazz -- in black face, no less. "The Jazz Singer" was the first "talkie," i.e., the first full-length feature film to include audible dialogue. (Library of Congress)
