On The Campaign Trail With John McCain

John Sidney McCain III is the senior United States Senator from Arizona, and a candidate for the Republican Party nomination in the 2008 presidential election. McCain established a reputation as a political maverick for his willingness to defy Republican orthodoxy on several issues. While the two Democratic candidates shuffle for position as the party's nominee, McCain has used their in-house bickering as an advantage, trying to reach out to America as the "solid" choice for the country's future. Despite his status as the lone Republican, McCain hasn't had a free pass from his own party members. He has tried simultaneously to distance himself from the policies of President Bush while also reaching out a friendly hand to conservatives who have called him too liberal a Republican to maintain their traditional party ideals.
